Where these grams come from

The daily amount of fresh food is worked out from body weight: the German veterinary association for animal welfare suggests around 200 g of greens per kilogram of body weight per day. For a 900 g guinea pig that is roughly 180 g a day, split between several foods. The portions in the table are shares of that amount, adjusted for calcium, sugar and oxalates.

Nobody has published exact grams for each individual food: this is our guide, not a norm. There is no need to weigh food daily — weigh once to get a feel for the size, then your eye is enough. Greens should be available all the time, and it is better if a little is left over until the next feed.
